In Context
Decolonizing the value and meaning of art, is to reclaim the word Sani, a way of living which involves “offering, service and search of the unknown for the self”(6), which is a shared lost knowledge and practiced that was told by Pak Agus Rahayu, my grandmother’s Pamong, Javanese meditation guru. As told, literature of such philosophy is lost. Manuscripts was taken away during the colonial era of the Dutch East Indies, or rather what we call today Indonesia. During the second century of the Colonial era, the word Sani, has been changed and territorialize as Seni, which is a translation for the Dutch’s word Kunst: “art,” originally "knowledge, skill" , abstract noun from "to know”. An antonym to unknow, perhaps?

The word grew by the culture of collecting, by explorers and archaeologist, in addition to the adjective Traditioneel to objects that is made, used and lived by the locals or others, outward perspective. (2) The distinction of “Traditional Art” and “Fine Arts” grew during the Modernization of the colony to the independence as a nation. Beginning with Modern Art of the 19th romanticism from Javanese painters apprenticing abroad to Indonesian Contemporary Artist participating in “International Art Fairs”, such binary still exist.
